Olympics Bid: Ahmedabad to Deploy 3,000 Electric Buses by 2036

The Ahmedabad Municipal Transport Service (AMTS) has announced plans to deploy nearly 3,000 electric buses by 2036 as part of a major expansion of the city’s public transport system.

According to The Times of India, the rollout will begin in the 2025–26 financial year with 449 electric buses. Of these, 225 will replace existing CNG buses, while 224 will require new depots and parking facilities.

The large-scale expansion aims to modernise Ahmedabad’s transport network and support the city’s sustainability goals.

The plan is part of a long-term strategy to strengthen public mobility in anticipation of the 2036 Olympic Games, for which Ahmedabad is among the shortlisted host cities. Authorities say a modern and eco-friendly public transport network is critical to meeting future urban mobility demands.

To accommodate the new fleet, AMTS is planning to build additional bus depots, particularly around the SP Ring Road area, and improve supporting infrastructure such as charging stations and maintenance facilities.

Officials said the transition to electric buses would not only reduce emissions and improve air quality but also help lower operational costs over time. “This is a significant step towards cleaner, more efficient public transport in Ahmedabad,” The Times of India reported, citing AMTS officials.

With this initiative, Ahmedabad will join a growing list of Indian cities investing heavily in electric mobility. The move aligns with national climate goals and the government’s push to promote electric public transport in urban centres.
