9 dead after fire breaks out in residential building in east Delhi

At least nine people were killed after a fire broke out in a residential building in east Delhi’s Vivek Vihar early Sunday, officials said.

The fire was reported at around 3.48 am at a four-storey building in Vivek Vihar Phase-I. Police, fire department personnel and disaster management teams rushed to the spot after the incident was reported.

According to police, the blaze spread across flats on the second, third and fourth floors of the building, triggering a large rescue operation. Officials said the exact cause of the fire has not yet been established, though there are reports suggesting the blaze may have started after an AC blast.

Police said five of the nine bodies were recovered from the second floor of the building, while three others were found on the staircase. The body of another victim was recovered from the first floor, according to a report by India Today.

“Around 10 to 15 people were rescued from the premises during the firefighting operation. Two of them, who sustained minor injuries, were shifted to the Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital,” a senior police officer said.

Officials said 12 fire tenders were deployed to control the blaze. Teams from the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), traffic police and local police also joined the rescue and evacuation operation.

Police said the fire was brought under control after several hours.

The identities of the victims are yet to be ascertained. Police said efforts are underway to determine the exact cause of the fire.
