Kolkata Metro Pink Line gets KMC clearance after 15-year delay

The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has cleared a key hurdle for the long-delayed Baranagar-Barrackpore Metro corridor, issuing an NOC for the closure and isolation of an existing 48-inch drinking water pipeline along BT Road.

The clearance will allow work to proceed on the 12.40-km Pink Line corridor, which is being constructed by Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd (RVNL).

The project has remained stalled for years because of a deadlock over shifting the underground water pipeline along BT Road.

The corridor will have 10 stations and a viaduct running over BT Road. The construction contract is estimated at around Rs 1,587.39 crore, with bids scheduled to be submitted by September 29, 2026.

The Baranagar-Barrackpore stretch is expected to improve Metro connectivity for residents in north Kolkata and adjoining areas.

The KMC clearance marks an important step towards restarting construction on a project that has faced prolonged delays.
