Mumbai-Pune Expressway missing link opens, expected to reduce travel time

The long-awaited missing link section of the Mumbai-Pune Expressway was inaugurated on Saturday (May 2), with authorities saying the project is expected to reduce travel time and improve traffic flow on the corridor.

Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis attended the inauguration of the project, which forms part of a major upgrade to the expressway network connecting Mumbai and Pune.

Officials said the new section is expected to reduce congestion on key stretches and improve overall connectivity between the two cities.

The project includes tunnels, bridges and redesigned alignment sections aimed at improving vehicle movement through difficult terrain, reported The Times of India.

Authorities said the upgrade would also help improve safety and reduce bottlenecks along the route.

The Mumbai-Pune corridor is one of the country’s busiest inter-city transport routes and carries heavy daily traffic movement.

Infrastructure agencies have been working on the project in phases over several years.

The opening marks a major milestone in highway infrastructure development in Maharashtra.
