Uttarakhand launches Sharda Corridor to boost tourism, livelihoods

Uttarakhand on Wednesday launched the Sharda Corridor project, a multi-faceted initiative to develop the Banbasa–Mata Rankochi stretch as a combined destination for religious tourism, nature experiences and local livelihoods.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami inaugurated the first phase on 29 October 2025. The government described the corridor as a programme that will link pilgrimage sites, provide riverfront amenities, and create support infrastructure such as a heliport at Banbasa, dedicated cycling and trail facilities, visitor centres and local-market zones intended to boost incomes for nearby communities, reported The Indian Express.

Officials said the scheme includes river-edge redevelopment, improved connectivity and facilities for pilgrims and tourists, combined with measures for livelihoods and community participation. The initiative is being positioned as a bridge between faith, ecology and economic opportunity for the region, particularly communities along the Sharda river.

The first phase focuses on site improvements, temporary visitor amenities and access upgrades; subsequent phases will include longer-term investments depending on clearances and funding details. Government statements point to a mix of central, state and local agency involvement to cover construction, operations and environmental safeguards.
