India now 4th largest renewable energy producer with 257 GW

Union minister for new and renewable energy Pralhad Joshi on Tuesday (28) said India has become the world’s fourth-largest producer of renewable energy, with an installed capacity of 257 GW — a three-fold rise from 81 GW in 2014.

Addressing the 8th session of the International Solar Alliance (ISA) Assembly, Joshi said India’s solar power capacity alone has grown from 2.8 GW in 2014 to 128 GW. He noted that solar module manufacturing capacity has increased from 2 GW to 110 GW, while solar cell manufacturing has expanded from zero to 27 GW.

“India is now the world’s fourth-largest in renewable energy capacity. Renewables in 2014 vs now: 81 GW – 257 GW,” he said.

Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, India achieved its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) target of 50 per cent capacity from non-fossil sources five years ahead of schedule, Joshi added.

He said India’s renewable energy tariffs — including solar, solar-plus-battery, and green ammonia — are among the lowest globally, showing its ability to scale clean energy efficiently and affordably.

Quoting international assessments, Joshi said the International Energy Agency projects India will soon become the world’s second-largest renewable market, while the International Renewable Energy Agency calls it an “energy transition powerhouse.”

Among G20 nations, India is the only country to have achieved its 2030 renewable energy goals as early as 2021. “We have consistently been at the forefront of global efforts to mitigate climate change,” he said.

Highlighting India’s commitment to equitable global energy growth, Joshi announced that India is contributing USD 25 million to the Africa Solar Facility under the ISA to support mini-grids and distributed renewables across Africa.
