Patna Metro: All You Need to Know About Bihar’s First Metro Line

Bihar marked a major milestone in its urban transport network onMonday, 6 October 2025, as Chief Minister Nitish Kumar inaugurated the first phase of the Patna Metro — a key infrastructure project expected to ease traffic congestion and enhance public mobility in the capital.

The inaugural ceremony took place at the ISBT (Inter-State Bus Terminal) station, where the Chief Minister flagged off a trial run of the metro between ISBT and Bhoothnath.

What Has Been Inaugurated

The newly opened stretch is part of the Patna Metro Blue Line, officially known as Line 1, which runs from Danapur Cantonment to Khemni Chak. The operational segment from ISBT to Bhoothnath covers nearly 6 kilometres and includes five elevated stations — ISBT, Pahari, Kumhrar, Kankarbagh, and Bhoothnath.

This first section will serve as a testing corridor before the metro becomes operational for the public later this year, following safety clearances from the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS).

Patna Metro Route and Lines

The Patna Metro project comprises two corridors — the Blue Line and the Green Line:

• Blue Line (Line 1): Danapur Cantonment – Saguna More – RPS More – Patliputra – Mithapur Bus Stand – Khemni Chak (24.5 km)
• Total Stations: 14 (Elevated: 8, Underground: 6)
• Green Line (Line 2): Patna Junction – Akashvani – Gandhi Maidan – PMCH – Rajendra Nagar – ISBT (16.5 km)
• Total Stations: 12 (Underground: 7, Elevated: 5)
• Together, both lines will cover around 40 kilometres, forming the backbone of Patna’s mass rapid transit system.

Cost, Timeline, and Execution

The Patna Metro Rail Project is being developed at a cost of about Rs 13,365 crore and is fully funded by the Government of India and the Government of Bihar.

Construction work is being carried out by Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), which is also providing technical expertise and supervision.

The project’s foundation stone was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in February 2019, and it is expected to be fully operational by 2027.

The state government said that progress has accelerated in recent months, with key civil and underground works nearing completion in multiple sections.

Fares and Operations

While the final fare structure has not yet been announced, officials have indicated that fares will be affordable and aligned with other metro networks in India, with a minimum fare expected around Rs 10–15 and maximum between Rs 40–60, depending on the distance.

The metro will operate at intervals of 5 to 10 minutes, connecting high-density residential and commercial areas, and offering seamless integration with ISBT, Patna Junction, and future city bus terminals.

Future Expansion

The remaining sections of the Blue Line and Green Line are under construction and expected to open in phases through 2026–2027.

Long-term plans include extension routes towards Bihta Airport and Patna Airport, integrating with the regional rail network.

The Patna Metro Rail Corporation (PMRC) has launched an official portal providing live construction updates, route details, and future expansion plans.
