Tamil Nadu approves Rs 261 crore for Global Sports City near Chennai

The Tamil Nadu government has approved Rs 261 crore for the development of the Global Sports City at Semmancheri on the outskirts of Chennai.

The state sanctioned Rs 30 crore for 2025–26 and Rs 231 crore for 2026–27 for the project, which spans 42.2 acres, reported The New Indian Express.

First announced in the 2023–24 Budget with an estimated cost of Rs 301 crore, the sports hub will include a FIFA-standard football turf, shooting and archery facilities, water sports, and a skating zone.

The master plan also includes a lake and water body to support water-based sports and rainwater conservation.

Officials said the project aims to make Chennai a destination for international tournaments and large-format sporting events.
