Surat’s Urban Mobility Leap: Metro & BRT Integration Ahead

Surat is expanding its mass rapid transit with two transformative systems underway: the Surat Metro and the Sitilink Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS).

The Surat Metro, under construction since January 2021, will feature two corridors spanning 40.35 km and 38 stations, integrating elevated and underground sections. Phase-I aims for completion by December 2027, enhancing regional connectivity and transit capacity. 

Complementing this, the Surat BRTS, operational since January 2014, runs 114 km over two phases with 148 stations, handling around 125,000 riders daily. This system has significantly improved transit reliability and transit-oriented commuting in the city.

Passengers already enjoy seamless travel across BRTS lines thanks to Surat’s Automatic Fare Collection System (AFCS), which integrates ticketing across city buses and BRTS services through QR codes, smart cards, and mobile access.

Additionally, the Gujarat government recently established a Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (UMTA) for Ahmedabad and Surat to orchestrate multi-modal integration and mobility planning—bringing metro, BRT, feeder services, and walkable infrastructure under one governance umbrella.  This integrated vision positions Surat as a case study for layered transit systems—ensuring that newer infrastructure like metro lines complement, rather than compete with, existing systems like BRTS, delivering inclusive mobility and smoother transitions for citizens.
