Cabinet Approves 4-lane greenfield section on NH-139W in Bihar

The Union Cabinet on 24 September 2025 approved construction of a 4-lane greenfield section on National Highway NH-139W running from Sahebganj to Bettiah via Areraj.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) cleared the project on Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM), with a total project length of 78.942 km and an estimated capital cost of ₹3,822.31 crore.

The Sahebganj–Areraj–Bettiah stretch will strengthen east-west connectivity in northern Bihar by improving the road linkages between district towns and easing access to Patna and adjoining markets.

The project’s HAM procurement model means the central government will pay a portion of the project cost during construction and the balance over the operation period, reducing immediate fiscal pressure on the state while delivering long-term infrastructure benefits.

For local communities and freight operators, the new corridor promises shorter travel times and smoother connectivity for agricultural produce and industrial inputs.

Officials expect improved road safety, better logistics for small and medium enterprises, and fresh scope for roadside economic development, from warehousing and logistics parks to service amenities along the alignment.

During construction, traffic management plans and temporary diversions will be needed; authorities normally publish detailed plans in advance to minimise disruption.

Bihar has been a policy focus for improving inter-district transport and economic corridors.

The NH-139W project sits alongside other central investments in the region and is likely to be integrated with state road upgrades and future regional connectivity plans.
