Mumbai begins Rs 100 crore footpath revamp across key roads

Mumbai’s Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has started work on a Rs 100 crore project to upgrade 16.55 km of footpaths across 14 important roads in the city’s island, eastern and western suburbs.

According to officials, the work includes repairs to kerbstones, dividers, traffic signages, thermoplastic road markings and civil improvements, reported The Times of India.

The initiative is part of efforts to enhance pedestrian safety and improve walkability under national accessibility guidelines.

The project covers stretches such as Juhu Tara Road, SV Road and DN Road, where updated designs will include tactile pavers, ramps and height-standardised footpaths to support universal access.

BMC officials said the revamp aims to reduce pedestrian–vehicle conflict and promote non-motorised transport across crowded corridors. Work on the pilot stretches has already begun and will be implemented in phases.
