Vande Bharat Sleeper clears high-speed test at 180 kmph, shows smooth ride

The Vande Bharat Sleeper train successfully completed a high-speed trial, clocking 180 kmph on the Kota–Nagda section, marking a key milestone ahead of its commercial rollout.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the trial was conducted under the supervision of the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) and demonstrated the advanced engineering features of the sleeper variant.

During the trial run, a water test was carried out to visually demonstrate ride stability. Glasses filled with water placed inside the coach remained steady even as the train touched its top speed, indicating minimal vibration and enhanced passenger comfort.

Unlike the existing Vande Bharat Express services that operate as chair-car trains for daytime travel, the sleeper version has been designed for long-distance overnight journeys. The train will be fully air-conditioned and is expected to feature sleeper and AC three-tier coaches.

Indian Railways officials said the sleeper variant incorporates upgraded suspension systems, reduced noise levels, modern toilets, automatic doors, and advanced braking and safety technologies to support higher operational speeds.

The 180 kmph run forms part of an extended trial programme being conducted under CRS supervision to evaluate performance parameters such as ride comfort, braking efficiency, and overall safety.

While current Vande Bharat trains operate at speeds of up to 160 kmph on most routes, the sleeper version has been engineered for higher speeds, subject to regulatory clearances.

Officials said additional trials will be carried out before the train is certified for passenger services. The Vande Bharat Sleeper project is part of Indian Railways’ broader effort to modernise long-distance rail travel using domestically manufactured semi-high-speed trains.

Once certification is completed, the sleeper variant is expected to be introduced on select high-demand corridors, offering faster travel times and upgraded amenities for overnight journeys.
