India’s cities may need Rs 80 lakh crore infra investment by 2037: Report

India’s cities could require nearly Rs 80 lakh crore in infrastructure investment by 2037 to support urban growth and economic expansion, according to a report by Brickwork Ratings.

The report estimates that urban centres are expected to contribute nearly 70 per cent of India’s GDP by 2036.

It highlighted the increasing importance of municipal bonds, public-private partnerships and market-linked financing models for future city development.

The report also referred to the Centre’s proposed Rs 1 lakh crore Urban Challenge Fund aimed at supporting urban infrastructure projects, reported The Economic Times

Analysts said tier-2 and tier-3 cities are likely to increasingly depend on credit-based financing mechanisms for infrastructure expansion.

The study highlighted rising investment requirements linked to transport, water supply, housing and civic infrastructure systems.

India’s urban population and infrastructure demand are expected to rise significantly over the next decade.

The findings reflect growing focus on long-term financing models for rapid urbanisation.
