Gurugram to expand water supply to Sectors 58-80 after pipeline revival

The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has restored an 18-km master water pipeline from the Chandu Budhera water treatment plant to the Sector 72 boosting station, bringing the long-delayed facility closer to operation.

Water has started being stored at the Sector 72 station. GMDA will now clean the storage tanks and test the distribution network before beginning supply to residential areas, which officials expect to start within a month.

The pipeline was originally laid by Haryana Shahari Vikas Pradhikaran in 2012. It remained non-functional after the alignment of the Dwarka Expressway changed and the pipeline had to be shifted along the Central Peripheral Road.

More than 30 leaks were repaired along the 18-km pipeline over the past year. A missing section beneath the Dwarka Expressway was also laid during this period.

The Sector 72 facility will be used to augment water supply to Sectors 58 to 80, which are currently dependent on the Sector 51 boosting station.

“The sector 72 boosting station is basically a pumping station, and it will be used to supply water from sector 58 to sector 80. These areas are currently being supplied water from sector 51 boosting station, and these are basically underserved, but with the new pipeline becoming operational, we would be able to supply adequate water in these sectors,” said Abhinav Verma, executive engineer, GMDA.

The boosting station has a pumping capacity of 283 million litres per day, while the associated storage tank has a capacity of around 50 MLD.

“We will clean the tank which has around 50 million litres per day (MLD) capacity; the pumping station is 283 MLD, and it will be used to augment supply in sector 58 to sector 80. It is likely to take one more month for testing the distribution network to start supply,” Verma said.

The facility will also serve Gwal Pahari village and surrounding areas. GMDA has constructed a water-boosting system there and is laying another pipeline.

Officials said the maximum leakages along the old pipeline were found up to NH 48, with repairs under way at its endpoint near Vatika Chowk.

Once the Sector 72 station becomes operational, it is expected to reduce pressure on the Sector 51 boosting station and improve supply consistency to the surrounding sectors.

The revival of the pipeline brings back into use infrastructure that had remained incomplete and non-functional for years following changes associated with the Dwarka Expressway project.
