Chennai plans Rs 5,000 crore project to strengthen water supply

The Water Resources Department (WRD) is planning a Rs 5,000 crore project to future-proof Chennai’s water supply, officials said.

The project, which will receive assistance from the World Bank, is aimed at addressing rising water demand across the Chennai metropolitan region, covering an area of around 5,900 square kilometres, reported The Times of India.

Officials said the plan includes the construction of barrages across two rivers, improvements to existing reservoir infrastructure, and the installation of SCADA systems and real-time flood forecasting tools.

The project will be implemented in coordination with civic bodies, with performance studies and infrastructure assessments forming part of the planning process.
