Assam flood update: Seven districts still under water, 1.78 lakh affected

The flood situation in Assam improved slightly on Saturday, with the number of affected people declining to 1.78 lakh, although the number of submerged districts increased to seven, according to an official bulletin.

No fatalities were reported in the state during the last 24 hours, with the death toll remaining at 82, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said in its bulletin.

The Dikhow and Dhansiri (S) rivers were flowing above the danger level at Sivasagar and Numaligarh (Golaghat), respectively.

Seven districts — Golaghat, Sivasagar, Charaideo, Bajali, Dhemaji, Sonitpur and Jorhat — continued to remain affected by the floods. The deluge impacted 20 revenue circles and 349 villages.

According to the ASDMA, 1,78,837 people remain affected. Charaideo continued to be the worst-hit district, with 75,199 people affected, followed by Sivasagar, where 58,824 people remained impacted.

On Friday, five districts were affected and the flood-hit population stood at 1.92 lakh.

A total of 44 relief camps were operating across the state, providing shelter to around 15,000 displaced people. Another 17 relief distribution centres were also functioning, serving 5,569 people.

Floodwaters continued to submerge 15,060 hectares of crop area. The ASDMA said 1,543 animals had been washed away, while another 6,765 animals were affected.

The bulletin also reported damage to infrastructure, including houses, roads, bridges, schools and cattle sheds, in various parts of the state.
