Google parent Alphabet eyes massive India expansion with Bengaluru office: Report

Google-parent Alphabet is planning a significant expansion in India, including the potential acquisition of millions of square feet of new office space in Bengaluru, the country’s technology hub, Bloomberg News reported on Tuesday.

The company has leased one office tower and secured options on two additional towers in Alembic City, a development located in the city’s Whitefield tech corridor, totalling 2.4 million square feet, the report said, citing people familiar with the deal.

According to the report, the first tower is expected to open to employees in the coming months, while construction on the remaining two towers is scheduled to be completed next year.

If Alphabet occupies the entire complex, it could accommodate as many as 20,000 additional staff, potentially more than doubling the company’s footprint in India.

The report said Alphabet currently employs around 14,000 people in the country, out of a global workforce of roughly 190,000.

US President Donald Trump’s tougher stance on immigration — including tighter scrutiny of H-1B visas and potential taxes on outsourced work — could accelerate the shift of critical operations by US firms to India.

Alphabet is among the top sponsors of H-1B visas, according to US government data.

Trump has raised the cost of new H-1B visa applications to $100,000, up from an earlier range of $2,000 to $5,000, increasing pressure on U.S. companies that rely on skilled foreign workers to address key talent shortages.

India could host more than 2,400 global capability centres by 2030, TeamLease Services said in November.
