Nearly one-third of Ahmedabad streets surveyed lack pedestrian facilities

Ahmedabad scored 42.3 out of 100 on the Walkability Index in the State of Indian Streets 2026 report, ranking 12th among major Indian cities after an assessment of pedestrian infrastructure across 1,789 street locations in the city.

The report, published by the Council for Active Mobility, the Road Safety Network and urban data company Neural City, used a dynamic street evidence model to assess the real-world usability of pedestrian infrastructure. It found that nearly a third of the streets surveyed lacked pedestrian facilities.

The assessment gave Ahmedabad a score of 35.7 out of 100 for parking encroachment, citing parked vehicles occupying public space. Its score for protection and crossings was 28.2, with the report pointing to the absence of protective bollards, reported The Times of India.

The city also scored 20.6 for disabled accessibility, with a 98 per cent failure rate in providing tactile paving, making it difficult for visually impaired people to use pavements.

The report comes against a backdrop of problems faced by pedestrians across the city, including missing paver blocks, encroachments, vehicles parked on footpaths, trees planted in pedestrian paths and pavements that end abruptly. Two-wheelers using footpaths also add to the difficulties faced by pedestrians.

The report said that across 10 of the 12 major Indian cities surveyed, more than half of all sidewalks had severe obstructions.
