Ahmedabad secures Rs 2,720 crore for infra ahead of 2030 Commonwealth Games

Ahmedabad has secured approval for infrastructure projects worth Rs 2,719.80 crore from the Central government as part of preparations for the 2030 Commonwealth Games, which the city will host.

The funding will be provided under the Urban Challenge Fund, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to support transformative urban development projects across the country, reported the Ahmedabad Mirror.

The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has approved six projects for Ahmedabad covering sewerage rehabilitation, water management and public transport.

Once operational, the sewerage rehabilitation project is expected to significantly reduce problems such as overflows and leakages. It will also enable real-time digital monitoring and smart management of the city’s sewerage and storm water network. In addition, biogas and green energy produced from sewage sludge is expected to support an environmentally friendly circular economy.

The approved projects also include an Integrated Transit Management System and an Automated Fare Collection System. These will enable commuters to use a Common Mobility Card and a Common Journey Application across AMTS, BRTS and Metro services.

Citizens will also receive real-time public transport information, AI-enabled route planning and improved incident management through modern in-bus surveillance aimed at making travel safer.

Together, the six projects are intended to strengthen Ahmedabad’s urban infrastructure by making the city smarter, cleaner, more resilient and globally competitive while improving civic services through efficient, sustainable and future-ready systems.

Under the Urban Challenge Fund, projects can be undertaken across three verticals: Creative Redevelopment of Cities, Cities as Growth Hubs, and Water and Sanitation.

Gujarat has been allocated Rs 6,475 crore in Central assistance under the Urban Challenge Fund, enabling cities across the state to undertake projects worth a total of Rs 25,900 crore.

Under the scheme’s funding pattern, 25 per cent of project assistance is provided by the Central government, 25 per cent by the State government, and the remaining 50 per cent is mobilised through municipal bonds, loans or public-private partnerships.

Accordingly, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation will receive Rs 679.95 crore in Central assistance and Rs 679.95 crore in State assistance for the six approved projects, with the remaining amount to be financed through AMC loans.
