GMR unveils major expansion plan to turn Nagpur into aviation hub

GMR Group has unveiled a major expansion roadmap for Nagpur airport, with plans for a new integrated terminal, second runway and cargo infrastructure as part of a long-term aviation hub strategy.

Officials said GMR is expected to take over airport operations within the next few weeks.

The proposed expansion includes a new integrated domestic and international terminal planned within 36 months.

Authorities also confirmed plans for a second runway and cargo-handling expansion linked to the MIHAN logistics and aerospace ecosystem, reported The Times of India.

GMR chairman GBS Raju said Nagpur has the potential to emerge as “India’s Atlanta” because of its central geographic location and logistics advantages.

Officials indicated that the airport expansion would support passenger growth, cargo movement and aerospace-linked industrial activity in the region.

Nagpur has increasingly been positioned as a multimodal logistics and aviation hub due to MIHAN-linked infrastructure development.

The proposed investment forms part of broader airport modernisation and regional connectivity expansion plans.

The development marks one of the biggest aviation-led urban growth projects announced for a tier-2 Indian city.
