CNG gets costlier for second time in a week; Delhi price crosses Rs 80/kg

CNG prices were increased by Re 1 per kg on Sunday, marking the second hike in less than a week.

Following the latest revision, CNG now costs Rs 80.09 per kg in the national capital, according to Indraprastha Gas Ltd, the country’s largest city gas firm.

The increase comes days after the company raised CNG prices by Rs 2 per kg on Thursday.

However, rates of piped natural gas (PNG) supplied to households remain unchanged.

IGL said, “The retail selling price of CNG has been increased by Re 1/kg wef 6 am on 17.05.2026 in all geographical areas (GAs) of IGL”.

“The revision in retail prices of CNG has been effected only to marginally offset the impact of increase in input gas cost along with steep appreciation of USD,” it said.

The company added that even after the latest increase, CNG continues to offer savings of up to 45 per cent in running costs compared to vehicles using alternate fuels at current prices.

The latest hike comes amid a broader rise in fuel prices across the country. On May 15, petrol and diesel prices were increased by Rs 3 per litre for the first time in more than four years as state-run fuel retailers began passing on part of the losses caused by rising international crude oil prices during the ongoing US-Iran war.

With the revision, petrol in Delhi now costs Rs 97.77 per litre, up from Rs 94.77, while diesel is priced at Rs 90.67 per litre compared to the earlier Rs 87.67. Fuel prices differ across states because of variations in value-added tax.

Petrol and diesel prices are now at their highest levels since May 2022. Rates had largely remained unchanged since April 2022, except for a one-time reduction of Rs 2 per litre in March 2024 ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.

In Mumbai, petrol is now priced at Rs 106.68 per litre and diesel at Rs 93.14 per litre. In Kolkata, petrol costs Rs 108.74 while diesel is retailing at Rs 95.13. Chennai has also recorded an increase, with petrol now priced at Rs 103.67 and diesel at Rs 95.25 per litre.
