Explained: Why India’s GST collections climbed to an all-time high in April 2026

India’s gross Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections rose to a record Rs 2.43 lakh crore in April 2026, driven largely by a sharp rise in import-related revenues even as global economic uncertainty and tensions in West Asia pushed crude oil prices higher.

Government data released on Friday showed that gross GST collections increased 8.7 per cent year-on-year in April, surpassing the previous record of more than Rs 2.23 lakh crore recorded in April last year.

The latest numbers indicate that while domestic demand growth remained moderate, import-led revenues played a major role in pushing collections to a new high.

What pushed GST collections to a record high?

The biggest contributor to the increase was GST revenue from imports.

GST collections from imports rose 25.8 per cent year-on-year to Rs 57,580 crore in April 2026. In comparison, gross revenues from domestic transactions increased 4.3 per cent to more than Rs 1.85 lakh crore.

The data suggests that external trade contributed more strongly to tax collections than domestic consumption during the period.

After adjusting refunds, net GST collections stood at around Rs 2.11 lakh crore, up 7.3 per cent from a year earlier.

Refunds during April also increased significantly. Total refunds rose 19.3 per cent to Rs 31,793 crore. Domestic refunds jumped 54.6 per cent, while export-related refunds declined 14 per cent.

Global tensions and crude oil impact

The April GST data relates to transactions carried out in March, a period marked by tensions involving Iran, Israel and the United States that affected global markets and pushed up crude oil prices.

Brent crude prices crossed $126 per barrel on April 30 amid fears of renewed hostilities in the region.

Despite concerns over the impact of the West Asia crisis on the global economy, GST collections continued to rise.

However, the pace of annual growth moderated slightly. Year-on-year GST growth stood at 8.7 per cent in April 2026, compared with 8.8 per cent in March.

GST collections have steadily climbed over the years

Monthly GST collections have steadily increased over the last few years.

Collections were around Rs 1.67 lakh crore in April 2022 before rising to Rs 2.10 lakh crore in April 2024. The figure crossed Rs 2.23 lakh crore in April 2025 and has now reached a record Rs 2.43 lakh crore.

The continued rise reflects higher compliance levels, increased economic activity and stronger tax administration.

Andhra Pradesh records highest-ever GST revenue

States also reported strong GST growth in April. In Andhra Pradesh, total tax collections reached Rs 5,542.7 crore in April 2026, marking the highest monthly revenue recorded since the introduction of GST.

Chief Commissioner of State Tax A Babu said the performance came despite challenges linked to GST 2.0 rate rationalisation, which had an estimated annual revenue impact of Rs 8,000 crore.

“April 2026 recorded total collections of Rs 5,542.70 crore, the highest-ever monthly revenue, reflecting strong administrative efficiency and compliance,” said Babu in an official press release on Friday.

Punjab posts sharp GST growth

Punjab also recorded its highest-ever monthly GST collection in April.

Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema said the state recorded a gross GST collection of Rs 2,987.38 crore and a net GST collection of Rs 2,725.08 crore.

“The state has recorded a gross GST collection of Rs 2,987.38 crore alongside a net GST collection of Rs 2,725.08 crore. This exceptional performance reflects a remarkable year-on-year net GST growth of 70.70 per cent, translating to an impressive increase of approximately Rs 1,129 crore over our collections in April 2025,” Cheema said.

He added that Punjab recorded 66 per cent growth in post-settlement GST collections, rising from Rs 1,795 crore last year to Rs 2,987 crore this year.

“According to Government of India data, Punjab has recorded a staggering 66 per cent growth in post-settlement GST, surging from Rs 1,795 crore last year to Rs 2,987 crore. This establishes us as the highest-growing state in the country, significantly outperforming the all-India growth average and leading all north Indian states,” the minister said.

What the latest GST data shows

The latest GST figures show that import-related revenues are currently growing faster than domestic transaction revenues. The rise in refunds also points to increased tax settlement activity during the month.

At the same time, several states have reported record collections, which officials have linked to stronger compliance measures and administrative efficiency.

With GST collections continuing to rise year after year, the April 2026 numbers mark the highest monthly tax collection recorded since the indirect tax system was introduced in India in 2017.
