Delhi plans road tax waiver for affordable electric cars till 2030

The Delhi government has proposed a 100 per cent exemption on road tax and registration fees for electric cars priced up to Rs 30 lakh, under its draft Electric Vehicle Policy 2026-2030 released on Saturday.

According to the draft, all electric cars with an ex-showroom price of Rs 30 lakh or less registered in the national capital will be eligible for the exemption till March 31, 2030.

The policy document, uploaded on the transport department’s website, also proposes a 50 per cent exemption on road tax and registration fees for strong hybrid electric vehicles.

“Electric cars with ex-showroom price above (Rs) 30 lakh registered in Delhi shall not be granted any exemption from road tax and registration fees,” the draft stated.

The policy also outlines a shift in three-wheeler registrations. From January 1, 2027, only electric three-wheelers will be allowed to be registered in Delhi.

“The Delhi Electric Vehicle Policy 2026-2030 builds on this momentum to accelerate electric vehicle adoption, improve air quality and create a supportive ecosystem for electric mobility. The policy will be applicable from the date of the notification,” the draft stated.

An official order said the Delhi government has invited feedback and comments from the public on the draft policy for a period of 30 days.

The EV policy was first launched in August 2020 as a key initiative of the previous AAP government to address vehicular pollution and encourage the adoption of electric vehicles in the capital.

The policy had an initial term of three years, ending in August 2023, and has since been extended by the government.
