West Bengal SIR: 47 lakh objections disposed of, Supreme Court told

The chief justice of the Calcutta High Court has informed the Supreme Court of India that around 47 lakh out of 60 lakh objections filed under the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in West Bengal have been disposed of as of March 31.

A bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul M Pancholi noted that it had received a communication from the high court chief justice on Tuesday.

“We are quite happy and very optimistic about the facts and figures,” the CJI said.

The court was informed that approximately 1.75 lakh to 2 lakh objections are being processed daily as part of the exercise.

It was further conveyed that all pending objections are expected to be decided by April 7.

The hearing in the matter is underway.

The apex court is currently hearing a batch of pleas related to the ongoing SIR process in West Bengal.
