Nagpur aims to strengthen pedestrian infrastructure across city

Authorities in Nagpur are planning to expand the city’s pedestrian infrastructure under the Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP) aimed at improving walkability and last-mile connectivity.

The CMP had originally proposed construction of 664 km of footpaths across the city. However, only 347 km of footpaths have been completed so far, leaving a significant gap in pedestrian infrastructure.

Urban planners have recommended construction of footpaths along an additional 156 km of roads in the first phase of the next stage of development, reported The Times of India.

The estimated cost for this phase of the project is Rs 131 crore.

Experts said inadequate pedestrian infrastructure discourages people from walking or using public transport for short journeys due to poor last-mile connectivity.

Authorities have also pointed out that encroachments and poorly maintained sidewalks remain major challenges affecting pedestrian movement in the city.

Officials said expanding the footpath network will help improve safety and accessibility for pedestrians while supporting public transport usage.
