Adani Ports to invest Rs 16,000 crore in phase 2 of Vizhinjam seaport

Adani Ports will undertake the second phase of development of the Vizhinjam seaport at an estimated cost of around Rs 16,000 crore, with an announcement expected during the inaugural ceremony on Saturday, sources told PTI.

The second phase of development will be inaugurated on Saturday evening by Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan.

According to the sources, Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ) expects the phase 2 development to position Vizhinjam as the largest transhipment hub in the Indian subcontinent.

The expansion will add 4.1 million Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) to the existing capacity of the port.

The sources said Vizhinjam is currently the most advanced and fully automated transhipment hub in India, and the phase 2 development will incorporate updated automation technologies and equipment.

Key components of the second phase include berth expansion, dredging and reclamation to create additional operational capacity, and the construction of the deepest breakwater in India, spanning 920 metres at a depth of 21 metres.

The phase will also involve the deployment of green equipment such as electric vehicle charging stations, along with the development of critical infrastructure including an electrical substation, a sewage treatment plant, and International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) fencing, the sources told PTI.
