Tata Power to finalise Rs 6,500-crore wafer-ingot project by January

Tata Power is looking to finalise its proposed 10 gigawatt (GW) wafer and ingot manufacturing project, to be set up at an estimated cost of Rs 6,500 crore, by January next year, the company’s Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Praveer Sinha said.

The company is currently in discussions with multiple states and will decide on the project location soon, Sinha said on the sidelines of a company event.

Tata Power plans to set up the 10 GW wafer and ingot plant as part of its backward integration strategy. Sinha had earlier mentioned the proposal during an earnings call, without sharing further details.

He said there would be clarity on the proposed project in the last quarter of FY26.

“In January, we would be making some announcement. Meanwhile, we continue to explore potential site for the project,” Sinha said.

According to him, the company is evaluating various locations across states including Odisha, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, among others.

“We are looking at the state policies and incentives before finalising the location,” Sinha said.

He added that Tata Power will invest Rs 6,500 crore in the project.

The proposed wafer and ingot manufacturing facility is expected to help Tata Power become a fully integrated player in the solar manufacturing value chain.

At present, the company manufactures solar modules and cells.

A solar panel is made up of modules, which contain cells. Cell manufacturing requires ingots, which in turn are produced using wafers.

Tata Power Company Ltd, a leading integrated power company, owns a diversified generation portfolio of 15.9 gigawatts, comprising thermal, solar and wind power assets.

The Tata Group company is also looking to diversify into the nuclear power segment.

It plans to explore the development of small modular reactor (SMR) projects with capacities ranging from 20 megawatts to 50 megawatts, following the legal amendments required to allow the entry of private players into the nuclear power sector.
