Ahmedabad to redevelop 22-km stretch of Kharicut Canal for Rs 830 crore

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has approved a Rs 829.92 crore contract for Phase-2 redevelopment of the 138-year-old Kharicut Canal.

The work has been awarded to a joint venture of Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd and Fuji Silvertech Concrete Pvt Ltd.

According to officials, the 22.415-km stretch will be redeveloped from SP Ring Road to Naroda Muktidham and up to the Khari River, reported The Times of India. The corridor passes through Vatva, Ghodasar and other eastern parts of the city.

Under the project, the open canal will be replaced with reinforced concrete box structures, some equipped with stormwater drainage facilities. A road will be constructed over the covered canal, aimed at easing traffic movement and improving sanitation.

Officials said the project includes a 10-year defect liability clause, with seven years of maintenance for RCC work and three years for the roads constructed above the canal.

The redevelopment is expected to address long-standing issues of pollution, illegal waste dumping and flooding, while creating a new east-side mobility corridor.
