All You Need to Know About Diwali Muhurat Trading 2025

The National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) will hold a special Diwali Muhurat trading session on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, marking the start of the Hindu Samvat New Year.

According to circulars issued by both exchanges, the one-hour symbolic trading window will run from 1:45 pm to 2:45 pm. The timing marks a shift from last year, when the session was held in the evening between 6 pm and 7 pm.

The block deal session is scheduled between 1:15 pm and 1:30 pm, followed by a special pre-open session from 1:30 pm to 2:15 pm.

Both NSE and BSE will remain closed for normal trading on October 21, on account of Diwali Laxmi Pujan, and will also stay closed on October 22 for Diwali Balipratipada. Regular trading hours will resume after the festival.

In addition, the currency derivatives segment will remain shut on both days. However, the commodity derivatives and electronic gold receipts (EGR) segments will stay open for evening trading between 5:00 pm and 11:30/11:55 pm.

What is Muhurat Trading?

Muhurat trading refers to a special, one-hour trading session held every Diwali, symbolising an auspicious start to the new financial year, or Samvat.

The word ‘Muhurat’ means an auspicious time determined by planetary alignment in Hindu tradition.

Investors and traders believe that buying shares during this time brings prosperity and good fortune for the year ahead.

The practice is unique to Indian stock markets and is viewed as a way to honour Goddess Lakshmi, the deity of wealth.

Muhurat trading has been a long-standing tradition at Indian stock exchanges, with families and investors often making symbolic purchases to mark the beginning of a prosperous trading year.
