PM Modi inaugurates Navi Mumbai International Airport and new metro section

• Phase one of Navi Mumbai International Airport inaugurated at Rs 19,650 crore
• Airport to ease pressure on Mumbai’s existing international airport
• PM also opens new metro stretch, Mumbai One app, and STEP skill initiative

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday inaugurated phase one of the Navi Mumbai International Airport, developed at a cost of Rs 19,650 crore.

Spread across 1,160 hectares, the airport is expected to significantly expand India’s aviation capacity and reduce congestion at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport.

Before the formal launch, Modi took a walkthrough of the newly built facility. The airport is India’s largest greenfield aviation project, developed under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. It will serve as the second international airport in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

Modi also inaugurated Phase 2B of the Mumbai Metro Line 3, which runs from Acharya Atre Chowk to Cuffe Parade. The 2B section has been constructed at a cost of Rs 12,200 crore.

The Prime Minister dedicated the entire Mumbai Metro Line 3 (Aqua Line) project, worth Rs 37,270 crore, to the nation. Officials said the new line will enhance urban connectivity and support the city’s transport infrastructure.

In addition, Modi launched the Mumbai One app, which offers integrated mobile ticketing across various public transport systems.

He also inaugurated the Short-Term Employability Program (STEP), an initiative of the Department of Skill, Employment, Entrepreneurship and Innovation in Maharashtra. The programme will be implemented across 400 government Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and 150 Government Technical High Schools to align skill development with industry needs and improve employability.

The combined launch of the Navi Mumbai International Airport, the Mumbai Metro expansion, and related initiatives marks a key stage in the state’s ongoing infrastructure development.
