Hyderabad Outer Ring Rail Estimate Doubles to Rs 24,000 Crore

The estimated cost of the Outer Ring Rail (ORR) project in Telangana has nearly doubled to around Rs 24,000 crore, according to officials familiar with the development.

The project, which aims to create a circular suburban rail network around Hyderabad, was initially planned at about Rs 12,000 crore. The revised estimate reflects increases in land acquisition, construction materials, and alignment changes proposed after detailed feasibility reviews.

Officials said that the project, once completed, will help decongest traffic on the city’s existing railway routes and provide a key link between Hyderabad’s suburbs and satellite towns.

The alignment will connect major growth corridors, including Patancheru, Shankarpalli, Shamshabad, Ghatkesar, and Medchal, forming a complete rail loop.

The proposed line, spanning about 190 kilometres, is being jointly developed by the Telangana government and South Central Railway (SCR). State officials said the final alignment report will soon be submitted to the Centre for approval.

The Outer Ring Rail is expected to complement Hyderabad’s Outer Ring Road and upcoming Regional Ring Road projects, enhancing overall regional connectivity and reducing urban congestion.
