Bihar Plans ‘Greater Patna’ Development Model; Metro to Start Soon

The Bihar government has announced plans to develop a “Greater Patna” region based on the NCR-style land pooling model, while also preparing to start operations of the city’s first metro line this month.

Cabinet Minister (Urban Development and Housing Department) Jibesh Kumar said the plan includes the creation of nine satellite towns to decongest Patna and spread growth beyond the current city limits.

The land pooling method will be used to acquire land in partnership with landowners, providing them a share of the developed plots instead of cash compensation.

At the same time, the Patna Metro’s priority corridor from Malahi Pakri to New ISBT is set to begin operations soon, pending final inspections. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to inaugurate the service later this month.

Officials said that the metro project, once fully operational, will ease congestion, modernise transport, and boost connectivity across the capital.

Urban planners described the dual initiatives of Greater Patna and the metro as a significant step towards transforming the city into a more sustainable and planned urban hub.
